Adult assessment in Calgary

Neuropsychological assessment

A focused evaluation of memory, attention and other thinking abilities—designed to clarify the nature of a concern, its everyday effects and the decisions that follow.

What the assessment addresses

Understanding cognitive change in context

A neuropsychological assessment examines patterns of cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Test results are interpreted alongside health history, symptoms, records and day-to-day functioning—not in isolation.

The purpose is to answer a defined referral question. Depending on the circumstances, this may involve clarifying whether a reported change is consistent with a neurological condition, brain injury, medical illness, aging, psychological factors or a combination of influences.

The process

From referral question to useful conclusions

  1. 01

    Clarify the question

The concerns, relevant history and decisions the assessment needs to inform are established first.

  2. 02

    Gather the evidence

Information may include clinical interview, collateral information, records and standardized cognitive testing.

  3. 03

    Integrate the findings

Results are considered together to develop conclusions that directly address the referral question.

  4. 04

    Explain what follows

Feedback and recommendations connect the findings to care, rehabilitation, work or other practical decisions.

Referral contexts

Assessment for clinical and independent questions

Assessments may be requested by individuals and families, physicians and other health professionals, rehabilitation teams, insurers, employers or legal referral sources. The scope and sources of information will depend on the referral context.

If you are unsure whether neuropsychological assessment is the appropriate next step, an initial enquiry can be used to clarify fit and referral requirements.
